Unleashing the Scientist Within: Accessible Science at The Prentice School
At The Prentice School, science isn’t just a subject—it’s an adventure. Our innovative approach transforms traditional science education into an exhilarating exploration of the natural world, where every lesson sparks curiosity, hands-on discovery, and those unforgettable "aha!" moments.
From Textbooks to Test Tubes
Gone are the days of passive learning through textbooks. At Prentice, students step into state-of-the-art labs brimming with microscopes, circuit boards, robots, and vibrant experiments. Whether they’re engineering a cushioned egg drop, dissecting frogs and cow eyes, or constructing earthquake-resistant buildings, students dive headfirst into immersive experiences. Each week brings a new challenge, transforming young learners into scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers.
Empowering All Learners
Science at Prentice is designed to be inclusive and accessible for all students. Using assistive technologies like Snap&Read, students seamlessly navigate lab instructions, formulate hypotheses, and document results through tools like text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and predictive text. These accessible tools ensure that every student, regardless of their reading level, can engage with and master grade-level content. This approach allows students with literacy challenges to fully participate in scientific discovery and thrive alongside their peers.
Guided by Passionate Educators
Our incredible science teachers, Mrs. de Jesus and Ms. Zippwald, bring boundless energy and expertise to every lesson. They foster an environment where questions are encouraged, ideas are celebrated, and learning is tailored to each student's unique needs. Their creative lessons not only teach scientific concepts but also ignite a lifelong love of learning.
Beyond the Classroom
Prentice values science so much that our 7th and 8th graders take their learning beyond the classroom with unforgettable experiences at sleepaway science camps. 7th graders attend Pali Institute, where they engage in hands-on environmental science and outdoor adventures. Meanwhile, 8th graders head to AstroCamp, where they dive into astronomy and physics through immersive, interactive experiences. These trips inspire a deeper love of science and foster teamwork, curiosity, and lifelong memories.
The impact of Prentice’s science program reaches far beyond the lab. By encouraging critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity, students develop skills that will serve them in all areas of life. They learn to observe, question, and analyze the world around them—essential tools for academic and personal success.
At The Prentice School, science is more than a subject; it’s a journey of discovery that empowers students to reach their full potential. As one of the many ways we nurture a love for learning, our science program exemplifies The Prentice Difference.
